Among his cited musical influences are reggae, jazz, and rapgroups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Godchaux listened avidly to rock and roll in his childhood, and as a teen he picked up guitar and began writing his own songs. He started playing drums at age two and owned his first drum set at age four, and around age 7 was drumming on stage with his mother, soul vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. Zion Godchaux was born and raised in San Francisco. After graduating from the University of North Alabama‘s School of Commercial Music, Randolph went on to work as a drummer, an engineer, a music producer, and a DJ. Muscle Shoals is known for its music scene, and early on Randolph was exposed to R&B, including artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and Aretha Franklin. Russ Randolph had been raised in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and picked up drums at an early age. Both members, who first met in 2004, had long careers as music producers, musicians and DJs. īoomBox was formed in 2004 by singer-songwriter Zion Godchaux on guitar/ lead vocals and producer Russ Randolph on sequencers, groove boxes and turn-tables.
According to NUVO, “BoomBox plays a unique blend of psychedelic rock and electronica,” and also incorporates elements of funk, soul, R&B, and house. The band is known for not using setlists, instead improvising and changing their set’s direction based on the crowd’s energy. They tour frequently, and have appeared at festivals such as Wakarusaand the Hangout Music Festival. Their second album, downriverelectric,was released in June 2010, while their most recent, Filling in the Color, was released in 2014. Originating in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the band is signed to Heart of Gold Records and has released three studio albums, starting in 2005 with Visions of Backbeat. īoomBox is an American rock and electronic duo formed in 2004 by singer-songwriter Zion Godchaux and producer Russ Randolph, both of whom have backgrounds as DJs. On August 20, 2016, Marshmello announced the Ritual Tour on Twitter, on which he will perform in several countries including the United States, China, South Korea, India and Paraguay from Septemuntil January 21, 2017. Later in July, he said on Twitter that he and Skrillex have “something awesome” for the fans which probably means they have a collaboration to be released. It was later disregarded as a publicity stunt by fans and the media due to their conflicting tour dates and a photo of “the two helmeted DJs hanging out together pre-show”. On June 19, 2016, Marshmello performed at Electric Daisy Carnival 2016in Las Vegas where Dutch DJ Tiësto, who wore the same clothes as Marshmello, showed up on stage and took off his helmet assuming to be Marshmello. It was later announced that future house duo MRVLZ had won the contest. The winner would have their remix released by Monstercat and a chance to play an opening DJ set at Camp Bisco. On June 3, 2016, it was announced that there would be a remix contest for “Alone”. Marshmello debuted on Monstercat with his song “Alone”, which appeared on the compilation album Monstercat 027 – Cataclysm. The album peaked number five on Billboard’s electronic/dance albums chart. Two singles were released from the album, titled “Keep It Mello” featuring rapper Omar LinX and “Want U 2”. As of 30 July 2016, the album is twelfth on the chart. The album topped iTunes electronic album chart on the first day. On January 8, 2016, Marshmello self-released his debut album Joytime, consisting of 10 tracks, through his own label Joytime Collective. As he released more songs, he began to receive support from established and well-known DJs like Skrillex who reposted his song “FinD Me” on his SoundCloud page. On March 3, 2015, Marshmello posted his first song “WaVeZ” as an original mix on his SoundCloud page. Included on the album was the single “Keep It Mello” featuring rapper Omar LinX. In 2016, Marshmello released a compilation of his previously released tracks, Joytime, which reached number five on the US Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart. Marshmello performed at New York’s Pier 94, Pomona, California’s HARD Day of the Dead festival, and Miami Music Week. Despite the anonymity, his career received international recognition in 2015 when he began releasing tracks online, including remixes of Zedd’s “ Beautiful Now“, Jack Ü’s “ Where Are Ü Now” and others. Inspired by other masked DJs like Deadmau5and Daft Punk, Marshmello appears wearing a full-head-covering marshmallow helmet. His musical style includes groove-oriented, synth and bass-heavy electronic dance music.
Marshmello’s identity remains unknown, although it has been suggested he is American DJ Chris Comstock, also known as Dotcom, as they are both alleged to have the same first names, birthdays, tattoos as well as similar music styles.
